What I'm Teaching..Week Of April 27th

Well we have made it to the LAST 6 weeks of school! I can't believe how fast this year has flown by. As we all know these last few weeks can be stressful! With all we that is expected to be taught, testing to be done and so much more, I know these next few weeks will be HARD but there is a light at the end of the tunnel!! Soon our day can be spent like this




Yes I actually took some time this week to sit and read by our pool! It was a great way to relax and recharge. I hope do get some time today too!!

So, since these next few weeks are crazy I like to save some of my favorite literature weeks to use during this time of year. 

This week is all about Tall Tales! We start off with this anchor chart


 Tall tales are short stories with an unbelievable plot line. Storytellers read tall tales as if they were true. Tall tales usually have exaggerations of actual events. In addition, many tall tales take place in an existing location, such as the American Old West, a European country, or at the beginning of a major historical event.

The books we will read through out the week are also displayed and I ask students to give me some observations about each of the characters




We will read one story a day and focus on the characteristics of each. Students will identify traits of what makes this a tall tale and later in the week they will be comparing the characters to see how they are similar and different.

This week I am using this pack for resources and literacy centers
It is filled with amazing resources! There are multiple recording pages, vocabulary activities, printable, guided reading passages on each character and literacy centers. I used this last year and this was the week my kids talked and talked about! So much fun!!


We are also going to being working on our Mother's Day gifts. We will using a craft and coupon book from here




My students will make a Thank You flower for their Mom or anyone else that is a caregiver. This craft has options to make it for who ever they need to!

This example shows how to print it on colored paper but, you would also just print it on plain paper and have the kids decorate the flower.

We are also going to start working on showing our Mom's how great our writing is using this FREEBIE from my store!

Five For Friday- April 24th

It was a fun filled week!


We started off the week digging into to Homophone. To help teach the words we played a matching game



I passed out the cards to each student then went around the room having them read aloud their word and then finding their match. They loved it! This is how it was displayed at the end. 
We had our 2nd field trip of the year on Wednesday. We took 220 K students to the ZOO! Yes, that is right 220! We have 11 K classes this year. On top of that we had the lovely threat of serve weather :/

Luckily the rain held off and we all had a GREAT TIME!


Since we spent Earth Day at the zoo, we had some catching up to do. The past few weeks we have been working hard on building sentences. To help with that skill and incorporate Earth day Fun!!



My students were so engaged with this activity. You could have heard a pin drop! Why do the admin never come in and see that in action?!  
 This past Thursday my Dad (who was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer last August) was on the Chicagoloand Fox news station telling his story and promoting the Pan Can Walk that is being done next weekend. I was SO incredibly proud of my Dad. He was a rock star and showed everyone how a positive attitude can help you fight off this awful disease.

I have been a HUGE Grey's Anatomy fan the show started in 2005. Last night was just AWFUL. Seriously I feel like I lost a friends. I cried BIG UGLY SOBBING tears over this. I don't know how this show can go on and next week...omg my eyes will be SO puffy!!


I was in such shock I went to IG to find some company to get over this! The fans are NOT happy!
I need a hug!

Magical Marvelous Monday!!!

Have you ever had one of those days where EVERYTHING goes just as you hope it to?All the starts aligned and the planets did too! One of those days that you would LOVE to bottle and save to use again. Well,today was that day in my classroom. It was AWESOME that I just had to share it :D

I am sure you are thinking" Really?! A day like that on a MONDAY?!" YES it really did! Over the past few weeks I have been feeling realllly burnt out! Like over done and ready to just sit by my pool and read the days away. I know I am not alone. This time of year for some reason just drains us as teachers.

SO yesterday I made the decision that today even though its a Monday I was going to be positive and share that outlook with everyone!! I started the day with this pic on Instagram



I know it's just a pic but boy did it sent the tone for my day :D I was not as tired as I usually am on Monday mornings. My coffee was extra delicious today too! Even a co worker commented on how chipper I was when I got to work at 6:45 am :)
If you follow me on IG you know how EXCITED I was to get my Creative Clip paper on Friday afternoon! I could not WAIT to bring it to school and start using it. The colors just shout HAPPINESS! A serious mood lifter.



After we did our morning calendar routine I decided to start out our spelling activities this week with a game. This week our spelling words are homophones. While yes they can be easy to spell it is knowing which meaning we are talking about. SOOOO I created this matching game last night


I passed out the cards to each student and had them read the word out loud and find their matching partner. Once they were located they placed their cards in our pocket chart



This activity was a HIT! It really helped them get an understanding of what these words mean and how we have to use them correctly. Tomorrow we will work on creating sentences for each of these words.

After my kiddos came back from Art we moved onto ANOTHER game...wait WHAT 2 games??!! YES!

We are also starting to dig into prepositions this week. What better way to expose these students to the words then by having a game of Scoot! We went over the expectation many times and practiced scooting A LOT before we began!

Once they were ready to move I set out one of these task cards at each students seat





This is the response sheet they wrote their answers down on. Now I have a VERY talkative class this year..13 girls out of 22! So I knew that I had to stress that they only have 30 second or so to come up with an answer. Once we started the scoot game you could have heard a PIN DROP! I was shocked at how focused and engaged my students were! I was SOOOO excited to see their excitement. This was the kind of moment that I know will stick out and they will remember. ANOTHER reason to smile :)

We also read a GREAT earth day book Planet Earth Gets Well. It really brought the message down to a kid level about what we can do to help make the earth feel better.



Of course we ran out of time and will continue the lesson tomorrow but, I know the message will remain in their heads.

What I am teaching..Week of April 20th- Earth Day Part 2

Hey everyone. Here is a peek at what is going on in my classroom for this week:

We are still working on our Earth Day investigations. We are going to be using ipads and start looking up facts about this day and what we can do. My students will be using this graphic organizer to write down the information



Later on in the week I am going to have them turn the facts into this writing activity:

Another activity my students will do for literacy centers this week is Write The Room. We will be using words related to our Earth

Students will also be able to use these pictures to create sentences or stories about what they can do to help the earth.

Another center will be our Fact/ Opinion sort. We will practice sorting some cards whole group and then in small groups students will sort the facts into their interactive notebooks

We will sort the cards first whole group in a pocket chart.

These will be sorted into their notebooks.

For some of my reading groups we will be working with this reader:




We will be using this book to gather facts and come up with ways that we can help our planet.

We are going to end our week with the cute craft I found on Pinterest


For the earth we will color coffee filters. Then kids will trace with hands and place them on top of this rainbow.
