Martin Luther King, Jr.-What I'm Teaching This Week.

Well, we made it! That first week was a tough one wasn't it?! I am so happy it's the weekend. Definitely time to rest and recharge! I love to binge watch some Netflix shows lately. I just finished Jane the Virgin and Odd Mom Out. Both were SUPER funny! Are you watching anything good these days?

This week we will be learning all about MLK. I have been teaching this topic for a few years now and I always try and find the best way to get the message across to the little ones. Last year I found this great blog post about using different color eggs showing how we are all the same on the inside.  You can read about that activity {{HERE}}. I will be using this same activity to start off our week. 

One of my favorite books to read is Martin's Big Words

This book shows how Martin used his words to change the world and, what an impact he had on equal rights. My students are always so intrigued about how life was like back then and how it makes them feel.

Once we finish reading this book we make an anchor chart with facts about MLK. We fill it with important dates and events that happened in his lifetime. I also use this topic to introduce timelines to my students.  During the week, the students will be identifying dates and putting them in order.

This one the students have 2 options. To cut and glue these dates in order on the template below OR I may give some the timeline with the dates and they can write what events happen.

In my guided reading groups, we are going to be using these biography books

We will be using graphic organizers to gather important facts and turn those into a writing activity

Yesterday I created another flip book for my students! They really love to make them this year.
