Pumpkin Time!

Pumpkin time is such a fun time of the year. SO many ideas and activities fill my classroom this time of year! Today I am sharing with your some of what we do in my classroom.

Reading.
Over the years my collection of pumpkin books grows and grows. I just can't help myself. Plus Scholastic ALWAYS has such great deals. Here are just a few that we read during this time of year.

When we start off the week I like to make an anchor chart to see what my students know about pumpkins. My friend Fern from Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas had a great chart that I am going to use this year.

So the students will add sticky notes with words and facts they already know.

One book I like to read is Pumpkin Jack

This book is a great way for students to see the life cycle. After reading it we use word and picture cards to build the cycle

Once this is done in a pocket chart,
I have differentiated  follow-up activities for my students.

Some students write sentences about the stages while others sequence pictures
Click on the pictures to see this resource in my TPT shop.

We also love to make flip books when we can! So of course, we have a pumpkin book this week!

                                                                  Pumpkin Flip Book

One other fun story to read is Pumpkin Town.

When we read this book, we stop before the ending and I have the write about what could happen.

You can grab this sheet by clicking here

If you have a pumpkin in your classroom a great math activity comes from this book.
This book explores skip counting and estimation. After reading it we cut open our class pumpkin and discover what is inside. Many of my students have not had this experience before and they reallly LOVE getting their hands in there. I created this sheet to help them group their seeds while scooping them out.

Click the picture of  here to grab them.

This is also the time of year where we starting addition using ten frames. I made these for my students to use manipulatives to help build their addition skills.

There are 10 frames up to the number 20 to differentiate the learning. I also have TONS of erasers and other fall type counters for them to use with these frames.
Click here to see them in my TPT shop.

Another fun math activity is to do some pumpkin  graphing. You can graph the number of seed from different sized pumpkins. I found this activity on Pinterest. If you don't have any food allergies this could be a fun experience for the students too!

There is also a graphing freebie to go with this. Click the picture or  here to snag it.

Using pumpkins during science is a no-brainer this time of year! You can do many investigations using pumpkins. We made this chart a few year ago.
My kids really loved the sink-float activity! Especially with different sized pumpkins. We also predicted the circumference of our class pumpkin with string. I had all my students predict how round the pumpkin was and we cut the string that length. Once everyone had their string displayed we really measured how big it was.  Here is a pin I found with a similar activity

If you have been to the Target dollar section recently you may have seen these pumpkin books.

They are blank books that come in a package of 6 fo $3.00. We will be using these in our writing center. I am still trying to figure out if we should use them to just create a story about pumpkins OR, use the book to reflect on all the pumpkin fun we have during this time. If you see these at your target I would GRAB them. SO many ideas to use them for!

** update- I made some journal pages for these books. You can grab them here!!

There are also SO many craft ideas for with pumpkins. Here are a few of my favorites I found on Pinterest

You can see these and TONS more ideas over on my Pinterest boards.

If there are any ideas you would like to share fee free to pin this image below.
